Copenhagen, 23 August (HS). India’s star women’s badminton player PV Sindhu has been ousted in the first round of the BWF World Championship 2023.
Sindhu, seeded 16th in the tournament, went down to unseeded Nozomi Okuhara 21-14, 21-14 in straight games despite leading 9-0 in the second game. It was her first round loss at a World Championship since winning her first medal at the age of 17 exactly a decade ago. She has struggled since returning from a five-month injury layoff in January.
Whereas PV Sindhu and Nozomi Okuhara never have a second round match in the BWF World Championships. The two have previously met in two World Championship finals and both defeated each other to become World Champions.
After the match, Sindhu said, “I am working a lot on my physical and mental fitness because I know these kind of matches make you feel very bad but it is all part of sport and life..It is important for me. I want to go back and prepare well and come back stronger in the next championship.”
