World Athletics Championships: India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra has created history. He became the first Indian athlete to win gold at the World Athletics Championships. In the javelin throw event, Neeraj won the gold medal with a throw of 88.17m at the National Athletics Center in Budapest, Hungary. Neeraj threw 88.17 meters in the second round itself. Since then, he maintained the lead in the points table and this lead was maintained till the end.
First Gold Medal in World Athletics Championships
The Olympic, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Diamond League champion had not only won gold at the World Athletics Championships prior to this tournament, but has now won gold in this event as well. Neeraj’s six attempts were 88.17m, 86.32m, 84.64m, 87.73m and 83.98m. An attempt was called a foul.
Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the silver medal with a throw of 87.82m. Jakub Wedlach of the Czech Republic won the bronze medal with a best throw of 86.67m. Neeraj was accompanied by two other Indian players DP Manu and Kishore Jena in the final. Kishor finished fifth with a best throw of 84.77m while DP Manu finished sixth with a best throw of 84.14m.
However, the Indian athletes disappointed in the 4×400m relay race. India finished fifth in the 4×400m relay race. America won the gold medal in this category. When France won the silver medal. While Great Britain managed to win the bronze medal.
Neeraj has also qualified for Paris Olympics 2024. The Paris Olympics will be played from 26 July to 11 August. Apart from Neeraj, India’s DP Manu and Kishore Jena also played in the javelin throw final but Kishore finished fifth and Manu sixth.
