A Malaysian of Indian origin has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and ten strokes of the cane for drug smuggling in Singapore. Devendran Shanugam, a cleaner at a community center in Singapore, pleaded guilty to two charges related to attempted possession of drugs with intent to smuggle, Channel News Asia reported on Tuesday. On Monday he was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and ten strokes of the cane. He had learned about the drug smuggling ‘opportunity’ from his supervisor, Indian-origin Malaysian Tiben Raj Anbalagan. Tiben Raj owed money to an unknown person whom he called ‘Boss’.

To earn money to pay off that debt, he agreed to smuggle ‘diamorphine’, cannabis and ‘methamphetamine’. When Devendran came to know about this, he told Tiben Raj that he had already delivered drugs and was ready to do so for money. Now the Danes started taking drugs and keeping them hidden in the storeroom of the sweepers.
