Israeli cabinet approves ceasefire with Hamas

Israel’s cabinet on Wednesday approved a ceasefire with the Palestinian extremist organization Hamas, which will bring a brief pause in the devastating six-week war and Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli jails in exchange for the release of people held hostage in the Gaza Strip. The prisoners will be released.

The Israeli government said that under the agreement, Hamas would release 50 of the approximately 240 hostages held in the Gaza Strip within four days. The government said that children and women would be released first.

Ahead of a cabinet vote on Wednesday morning, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would resume attacks on Hamas after the ceasefire ends. It is not yet clear when the ceasefire will come into effect.

The Prime Minister said, “We are at war and we will continue the war.” We will not stop until we achieve our goal. Israel has said that the war will continue until it destroys Hamas military installations and releases all hostages.

Netanyahu said intelligence efforts would continue during the ceasefire, which would allow the army to prepare for the next phase of fighting. More than 11,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 2,700 are missing in Israeli air and ground attacks, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
