The Pakistan People’s Party had also made a similar demand a day earlier to remove uncertainty about the upcoming elections. After meeting the ECP, Hussain said the commission conveyed its readiness to hold elections in mid-February and expressed its commitment to complete the delimitation process of constituencies at the earliest.

In an attempt to allay apprehensions about the elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan has assured political parties that general elections will be held by the end of January or mid-February. Dawn newspaper reported on Thursday that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) gave this assurance to the leaders of the Awami National Party (ANP). On Wednesday, ANP leaders held a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Sultan Raja. During that time other senior officials of the Commission were also present. The ANP delegation was led by its general secretary Iftikhar Hussain and included party spokesperson Zahid Khan and party leaders Khushdil Khan and Abdul Rahim Wazir.

The National Assembly of Pakistan was dissolved on 9 August. Elections are required to be held within a stipulated period of 90 days from the dissolution of the National Assembly. In mid-August, Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi appointed Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar as caretaker prime minister to run the country until new elections were held. But the Election Commission decided to delimit the constituencies afresh on the basis of the new census, which led to the delay in the general election.

During a meeting between the commission and ANP representatives to discuss the roadmap for the election, the ANP requested that if it was not practical to hold the election within 90 days, they would at least be notified of the election date and schedule.
