Abu Dhabi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the first Hindu temple in the UAE on Wednesday. This is being seen as a milestone in the relations between the two countries. Relations between India and UAE go back thousands of years. These relations, which started with trade in spices, jewellery, perfumes and textiles, have now reached energy, diplomacy and strategic relations. The India-UAE partnership has also emerged as a defining alliance of the 21st century. Relations between India and UAE started showing momentum after 2014, when PM Modi assumed power. In 2015, PM Modi also made a historic visit to the United Arab Emirates, which marked the beginning of a new era in diplomatic relations. After this, a series of visits, agreements and compliments started, which has strengthened the relations between the two countries. When India-UAE relations warmed up, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was the chief guest of the Republic Day celebrations in 2017. Came to India formally. The warmth in relations between India and UAE increased further when Al Nayhan honored PM Modi with the prestigious Order of Zayed in 2019. The strength of relations between India and UAE can be understood from the fact that both the leaders often break the protocol and welcome each other. Not only this, PM Modi always addresses UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as “brother”. How far has India-UAE trade reached? Till 1962, UAE was limited to the trade of dates, pearls and fishes. But, as soon as oil was discovered in UAE, it changed the whole story. UAE wrote a unique story of development through oil business, which left big countries behind. The UAE emerged as an economic powerhouse among the Gulf countries in the 1990s. By 1970, the bilateral trade between India and UAE was $180 million, which has increased tremendously to reach $73 billion in 2021-22. Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed between India and UAE in 2022. Both the countries have resolved to increase bilateral trade to 100 billion dollars in goods sector and 15 billion dollars in services sector in the next five years. Both the countries also became friends in diplomacy. It is not that the relations between India and UAE are now at saturation point. Have reached. UAE is an important partner in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. India has a dream of doing trade with Europe through this corridor. In the financial sector, both the countries had signed a major agreement in 2023. Under this agreement, India and the United Arab Emirates had agreed to trade in rupees and dirhams except the dollar. Apart from this, with the joint vision document of 2024, both the countries are going to work together on fintech, clean energy, climate change. India and UAE are also included in the I2U2 group formed with Israel and the US in 2021. PM Modi’s special relationship with the UAE PresidentEarlier this year, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had reached Ahmedabad to attend the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. During this, he also participated in a road show with PM Modi. After the summit, Union Minister Piyush Goyal had announced an ambitious target of increasing trade with the UAE to a staggering $100 billion. Now after trade, relations between India and UAE seem to be strengthening in the religious field also. The first Hindu temple in UAE is ready and PM Modi will inaugurate it on February 14.
